Can I feed the feed mixture after its expiration date?
In small-scale livestock farming, smaller quantities of feed mixtures are often used. Therefore, it is not uncommon for a farmer to have some pellets or loose feed mixture left even after the (expiration) minimum shelf life date. Is it still possible to feed such feed to the animals?
Why is the expiration date on feed so important?
The minimum shelf life date is not just an administrative detail.
- the stability of nutrients (vitamins, fats)
- the microbiological safety of the feed
Mycotoxins – the main and invisible risk
Mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by microscopic molds that can occur in grains and feed mixtures. Unfortunately, it is crucial to note that there may be no visible mold in the feed, it may not smell, and the toxins persist even after the mold is killed. Thus, the feed may look “completely fine,” but still contain substances that harm the animal’s body.
How do mycotoxins affect animals?
- reduced egg production,
- poorer shell quality,
- weakened immunity (higher susceptibility to infections),
- liver damage (the organ responsible for detoxification).
- digestive disorders,
- reduced feed intake,
- slowed growth,
- chronic liver damage.
Opened vs. unopened feed bags
It is often argued that an unopened bag after expiration is “still safe.” From a professional standpoint, this assumption is incorrect. It is true that an opened bag is exposed to air and moisture, which accelerates fat rancidity and supports mold growth. In such feed, the risk of spoilage is higher and occurs faster. However, this does not mean that an unopened bag is automatically safe after expiration.
The expiration date is not a formality, but a safety limit
A crucial fact is that mycotoxins can enter the feed even before its production. Grains and other raw materials used for feed may be contaminated with molds already in the field or during initial storage after harvest. During feed production, heat treatment destroys live molds and bacteria. As a result, the feed is microbiologically safe at the time of production and meets legislative requirements. However, it is important to distinguish between mold as a living organism and toxic substances. While molds are destroyed during production, mycotoxins are heat-stable and remain in the feed.
