Problems with fertility, breeding and conception in rabbits

If you want to avoid problems with fertility, breeding or conception, it is good to check the environment where does live and the amount of feed and adjust them as necessary.

Problems with breeding and conception in does are among the most frequently occurring problems in rabbit breeding. Conception and fertility as such are influenced by many factors (such as the environment and feeding) but only some of these can be influenced directly:

  • Ambient temperature – both, low and high temperature reduce fertility. Even temperatures above 25°C during the summer period have a negative effect.
  • Duration of daylight – days growing longer are optimal, alternatively artificially extended days to 14 to 16 hours of daylight per day are suitable.
  • Feeding may also have a major impact – the feeding must be suitable for breeding rabbits already during the early stages (it must not be fattening). Feeding mixtures for breeding rabbits is the simplest solution (the recommended dosing is approximately 50 g per kg of body weight during the period before breeding). The basic feeding dose may be supplemented with natural vitamin sources, such as carrot, parsley, celeriac, twigs from fruit trees or dandelions during spring.

Does must be at an optimal condition prior to breeding, i.e. must not be obese or too thin. They should not be hungry before breeding because it this case the natural reproduction processes do not work.

The optimal timing of breeding is simply determined according to the condition of the external sex organs of does. If the vulva is red in colour and appears to be swollen, successful breeding may be expected.
